Mural paintings

Mural painting is a unique form of art in which artists express their creative skills on walls, ceilings or any large scape permanent structure. The paintings blend with the surroundings so that it appears to mix together with the themes of the environment or the structure on which it is etched out. Mural paintings show different textures and patterns depend on how brushes, rollers and airbrushes are used. Moreover different types of natural pigments, vegetable colours, acrylic, oil paints or emulsion too are used in the murals and denote the individual versatility of the artists.

Mural paintings have evolved considerably from the traditional fresco to the more contemporary hand painted, air brushed or digital reproduction of designs. Mural painting artists are largely hand-picked by sponsors or local bodies due to the costs involved with decorating a large expanse of wall or ceiling. Murals beautify plain public spaces and lend it an artistic touch. It also depicts the latest political or socio-economic situation and public sentiments to current happenings. In India, Kerala murals are quite popular with works of art such as churches of Edapally, Vadakkunathan Temple in Trichur and the Ramayana murals of Mattancherry Palace.
